Meep. Thank you *hugs*
Everything has a "lifespan" eventually.
Even when you backup things, the backup devices/services aren't full proof either.
Or the technology is too recent to use things of the past.
Little did you know that drunk Mozart himself invented drum'n bass, but all data was lost in a fire, a flanging contrabass made a candle fall and ... Mozart had no recollection of these events afterwards.
Everything ends, indeed. I'll stick to external drives and paper for now. If all else fails, I might learn how to write on clay lol
Oh, that's really bad. Hope you'll get through it at the lowest possible cost
Thanks. It's unlikely that I'll get my data back at all. I've already made peace with that thought. C'est la vie
From now on I'm gonna force people to do the 3-2-1 backups: 3 copies, 2 locals, 1 offsite.
If you need data recovery, either @Lich and I could help. Ayyy, sysadmin is on duty.
Also, external drive will still fail (happened to me twice in a year, thanks God for backups). Stuff like voltage surge, your shitty USB port damaged or loosen, repeat disconnect and reconnect of the USB plug, bad sector by undefragged spaces, MBR or partition header damaged, and old school external damage of shock/water/dust/heat. That's why backup, backup, BACKUP!
:P
Of course they will. Everything fails/breaks at some point.
RIP 2009 - 2017 me. A new era begins.
RIP HDD ;3;
That's (very) unfortunate. :/
Hope everything gets sorted...
Drive is dead for good, so... it'll be a slow crawl back for me.
Thanks for the thought, I appreciate it

Ouch! That is indeed bad news, and the worst kind of setback. Having gone through similar issues several times in the past, you have my sincerest condolences.
I wish you luck in finding a viable solution. That said, don't be afraid to enjoy your hiatus! Nothing wrong with kicking back and having a bit of a breather after life goes sideways.

Thanks, yeah. There's probably no solution, as far as I know. I just lost that data forever. Well, I have a lot to think from this experience. Maybe that's life's way to tell me I had too many ideas, haha. Ha.
