The "small" things

Not too long ago, I had the honor of lending the following tracks for a short student film that was screened at a friend's graduation ceremony. I was there in the front row, and seeing my name at the end, along with my FD logo, really made me think lately.

I thought, why isn't anyone making more music videos here on Newgrounds based on tracks from the audio portal? It would be such a great opportunity for both musicians and animators to be known more, and it would also be a great way to experiment with something new.

I think there are so many interesting tracks around that go pretty much undiscovered until someone has a visual reference for them to work upon.

Oh, and of course, feel free to use any of my tracks (safe for those belonging to game soundtracks) for any Newgrounds or web-based project. Sharing the revenue would be nice, but not mandatory. I honestly don't even care if the final product is shit because I consider my tracks as a resource. I can't tell you how to use them; that's entirely up to you.

So, yeah, good stuff. Tell me what you think.

Maybe not necessarily a contest, even though I realize hard cash and being competitive could be a motivating factor for some, but I honestly believe in collabs more just for the sake of creating and stimulating the process. I mean, I think Newgrounds is a great place for collaborating between various folks from all kinds of backgrounds, cultural and artistic, and it's so easy to get in touch, too. So, in the end all I'm saying is... why not? Why doesn't this happen more often?

The only reason why I suggested a contest is not so much because of the hard cash (it may not even need to be a reward), but things like @RealFaction's Art-Inspired Music contest that happens each year can be a strong motivating factor if they gain support from the upper echelons of the site.

Alternatively, we can all band together, X number of us, barge into the Animation Forum and offer them a collab playlist or festival-type thing i.e. Music-Based Animation?

That's a cool idea, actually. Kinda like a Newgrounds Film Festival or something, promoting both artists/animators and musicians involved. It's like... I don't know if you're familiar with it, Nine Inch Nails once made a film festival with short films based on their album Ghosts I-IV. It was a huge collab effort from and for their fanbase.

It could be a first step, then maybe, if the thing kicks off, we could make an exploration game with art and music from the community.

Yeah, let's make a contest out of this! I mean, cash isn't the only incentive, front page for a few days could be a great initiative, or hell, even a digital trophy like 'turd of the week'. ( I dont know why that came to mind first, but I'm sure you know what I mean.)

I think it'd be great either way, but in my opinion a contest would be fun as a way to enter more freely (and still allowing collaboration among the creators, similar to the Animation Jams from last year), and also as a way to get more variety of tracks used for the videos... Maybe the issue being how to handle the expected length from the tracks, and hopefully avoid repetition of the tracks.

(Still, a collab would be excellent too, maybe in the line of this one http://www.newgrounds.com/portal/view/685745 )

I've found a lot of inspiration from Audio Portal tracks through the years, although usually more fosued on the 'ost' side rather than a 'music video'. In any case, more people have to know about this great resource and the great stuff you can find for games and animation. I'd be up to make a thing!

Thanks for your feedback. So far, people seem to be favoring the contest idea. I figure the track length would go from 2 to maybe 5 or 6 minutes at best, but numbers can be figured out later. It also takes quite a lot of time to even make a 1-minute animation, so we'll surely consult with the experts here :)

Awe yeah, great idea ForgottenDawn! :) I'm on the fence with the collab vs. contest - personally would prefer collab but I think a contest has its advantages and would pull more weight here.

Seems like a contest for something like this would bring in the most music, with everyone working with a track of their choice. I like collabs though. Less incentive, but more fun, more true to the NG spirit of all. :) Either way nice idea, would definitely join in if time allows.
